Telegram is built for streaming, not archiving. A video you watch in a chat may look saved, but it often lives in Telegram's cache—not in your phone's gallery. This guide shows how to save a Telegram video to your gallery on Android and iPhone, what to do when Save to Gallery is missing, and why a dedicated saver can keep the file after you clear Telegram's cache. For the official app, see Telegram Messenger.

Save a Telegram video to your gallery step by step

  1. Open the video in Telegram — Tap the video in the chat, channel, or group so it plays fully. Telegram only caches media you have actually opened; partly loaded clips may not save correctly.
  2. Tap the menu → Save to Gallery — On Android, tap the three-dot menu on the video and choose Save to Gallery. On iPhone, open the share sheet and tap Save Video.
  3. Check your gallery / Photos app — Look under a Telegram album, or in Movies / Recently Added. If the file is there, you are done.
  4. If it is missing, copy from cache with a saver app — When Save to Gallery is unavailable or the file vanishes after clearing cache, use a Telegram media saver to copy the cached file into a permanent folder such as Pictures/Telegram or Movies/Telegram.

Why saved Telegram videos don't show up in your gallery

Telegram separates viewing from exporting. Streaming a video downloads it into Telegram's private storage. That is not the same as writing a file your gallery app can index.

Common reasons a video never appears in Photos:

  • Save to Gallery was never tapped (auto-save is off for that chat type).
  • The channel owner disabled saving (see our channel download guide for what that means legally).
  • You cleared Telegram cache, which deleted the temporary copy.
  • Android scoped storage hides files under Android/data/org.telegram.messenger/ until you copy them out.

Where Telegram stores videos on Android and iPhone

Android (after Save to Gallery): Often DCIM/Telegram, Pictures/Telegram, or Movies/Telegram, depending on your device.

Android (cache only): Before export, files may sit under Android/media/org.telegram.messenger/Telegram/Telegram Video on newer versions. These paths are not meant for manual browsing on every phone.

iPhone: Saved videos land in the Photos app, usually under Recents. There is no user-visible Telegram cache folder like on Android.

Enable automatic saving under Telegram → Settings → Data and Storage → Save to Gallery if you want every viewed photo or video exported without tapping each time.

Save without losing quality

Screen recording re-encodes the video, adds UI overlays, and drops resolution. Screenshots only capture a single frame.

Saving the original file—through Telegram's built-in export or a saver that copies the cached MP4—keeps full bitrate and audio. That matters if you plan to edit or repost. For HD archival and batch exports, see download Telegram videos in MP4 / HD.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my saved Telegram video disappear later?

If you only streamed the video inside Telegram and never exported it, clearing cache or uninstalling the app can remove the file. Save to Gallery or copy the file to a permanent folder to keep it.

Where are Telegram videos saved on iPhone?

After you tap Save Video, they appear in the Photos app under Recents or a Telegram album if iOS creates one. They are not stored inside the Telegram app folder.

Will the sender know I saved their video?

No. Saving or exporting a file locally does not send a notification to the sender, unlike some read receipts.

Do I need root or jailbreak?

No. Built-in Save to Gallery works on stock Android and iPhone. Saver apps use normal storage permissions—no root or jailbreak required.
